Rated: 4 Star Rating
Over Yonder by Sean Dietrich is a book that keeps you hooked from the start. It follows Woody Barker, an ex-priest with a bad heart trying to quit smoking and live quietly on his houseboat, Ship Happens.
His plans change when he discovers he has a pregnant 17 year old daughter, Caroline Boyer, who is dealing with bad choices with her boyfriend, Tater. Right before her mother dies, she tells Caroline to dig up a flash drive hidden under her trailer's bathroom floor.
Suddenly, men connected with the mob are hunting them for it, forcing Woody and Caroline on a Southern road trip alongside an 80 year old named Amos, a hijacked Uber driver, and a goldfish named Gary.
All the while, Woody's former church members are trying to track him down to throw him a welcome home party.
What makes this book so good is how real and messy the characters feel. Woody is just trying to do right after a lifetime of mistakes, and Caroline is a kid who has faced nothing but bad luck. Watching them build trust from scratch is incredible to read about.
The story is packed with Southern humor, a lot of warm feeling, and a heavy focus on second chances.
The ending leaves you feeling content and happy. It is a great choice for anyone looking for a heartwarming story. I definitely would recommend this read.
