Millions of Cats Retold and Illustrated for Young Readers by Juliana Montoya; Wanda Gág

Rating: 5 star rating

This version of Millions of Cats is a charming update to a classic story, making it a great pick for toddlers and preschoolers around ages 2 to 5. The plot follows an elderly, lonely couple living in a quiet house who decide they want a pet. The husband journeys across the hills to find a feline companion but stumbles upon a hidden valley with trillions of cats. Unable to choose just one, he brings the entire group back home. When they arrive, his wife points out that they can not possibly feed so many cats, so they ask the cats to decide who is the prettiest. This triggers a massive argument because the cats are full of vanity, and they end up driving each other away.

Only one tiny, scrawny kitten was left behind because it was too scared of all the arguing. It was shy, kind, and humble. The couple welcomes this little kitten into their home, feeds it milk, and watches it grow into a beautiful pet.

Wanda Gág’s 1928 original relied entirely on black and white artwork, but this fresh edition features bright, engaging colors that are perfect for keeping a child's attention. This is a legitimate, high-quality publication carefully crafted by actual human creators, completely avoiding the robotic, generic feel of an AI-generated book. Illustrator and adapter Juliana Montoya reworked the wording so it flows better for younger listeners, and she even added original puzzle activities at the end.

It is a fantastic choice for a bedtime story that delivers a wonderful message. Being humble and kind can get you a long way in life. It even got the kitty a forever home.
