I just read "Woman of Shadows" by Donald Quill, and I really enjoyed it. It is a dark fantasy based on old Irish myths, but you don't need to know anything about mythology to follow along.
The story follows Scáthach, a tough warrior woman running a fighting school on a cold, foggy island. A bunch of young fighters show up, wanting her to train them.
My favorite part was when the Morrigan showed up disguised as a creepy old lady to deliver dark warnings about the future; it added such a cool, eerie vibe to the whole story.
The writing is super easy to read and gets right to the point. The sword fights are awesome and realistic without being confusing, and Scáthach is just a really cool lead character who has to make tough choices.
If you like fantasy books with tough female leads, ancient legends, and a dark atmosphere, definitely check this one out. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars!
