When Thoughts Get Stuck Peace of Mind in the Battle Against OCD by Will Van Der Hart and Thea Joshi

When Thoughts Get Stuck
Peace of Mind in the Battle Against OCD
by Will Van Der Hart and Thea Joshi

Rating: 4 star rating

I just finished reading the ebook version of When Thoughts Get Stuck by Will Van Der Hart and Thea Joshi, and I highly recommend it. Will is an Anglican priest and Thea is a mental health communicator, and they both open up about their own real life struggles with OCD. Their personal stories make it feel like you are reading advice from friends who truly understand your pain. It personally helped me understand OCD much better and figure out whether I might actually have it or not, because I felt a lot of the exact things they talked about in the book. The book does an great job breaking down how obsessive thinking tricks your brain. It dives deep into "thought-action fusion," which is the psychological trap where your brain treats a bad thought as if it is just as terrible as a physical action, or convinces you that thinking about a bad event makes it more likely to happen in real life. They also tackle religious moral integrity, showing how easily OCD can hijack your faith and cause constant, unearned guilt. Reading through these heavy topics completely takes away the shame and isolation of these mental battles. Instead of just explaining the problem, they give you practical psychological tools, spiritual encouragement, and guided prayers at the end of every chapter.

It wraps up by showing you how to embrace grace instead of chasing perfectionism. It is a comforting read that gives you a real peace of mind. I definitely recommend this book for anyone dealing with OCD.

Thank you, NetGalley, John Murray Press US, and authors Will Van Der Hart and Thea Joshi, for this book review consideration. All review opinions are my own.
